Listening to Bodies of Water
Listening to Bodies of Water is a site-specific, participatory deep listening practice facilitated by myself. Utilizing a hydrophone, a portable amplifier, and headphones, participants collectively engage in listening to the sounds beneath the water’s surface. The practice of deep listening necessitates focused attention, presence, and an expanded awareness that transcends individual physical boundaries. Listening to Bodies of Water has been supported by funding from Portland’s Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC). This project premiered at Sou’Wester Arts Week 2026, where over a dozen participants engaged in deep listening with the Pacific Ocean on the Washington coast.
